Mineral, zippy Chardonnay from South Africa

1 mai 2025

Cap Maritime Chardonnay 2022

A couple of months ago i had a bottle of South African Chardonnay at a friend's house, Cap Maritime Chardonnay, which really impressed.

The quality of South African wines has gone through the roof in the last 10 years with the pivot towards making a more elegant style. Lismore, Storm, Cartology and many more all worth looking out for.

Cap Maritime however sits for me at a price point that makes it even more interesting, £35 all in on the table isn't perhaps BBQ cheap, but given duty and vat now makes up £8/bottle and it's travelled all the way from the other side of the world, it's looks fair value to me.

This has everything you want from a modern chardonnay, energetic, full of citrus, apples, a touch of French oak and a mineral zippy salinity. I loved it and i'm sure you will too.

Cap Maritime Chardonnay 2022 - £210.51/6 inc vat. (£35/bt)

"The 2022 Chardonnay, with its 13.6% alcohol content, offers a delightful, fresh and lively profile with complex layers of citrusy apples, lemon, pastry cream and elegant oak. This year, it is the preferable choice over the Pinot of the same vintage. It concludes with an elegant, lively finish. It aged for 14 months in 70% new French barriques, and just under 5,000 bottles were produced. Yum! I'm going back for more."
